About

The young singer does not seem to fit into a box – present on opera- and concert stages alike, he is always searching for an adequate form of artistic expression. A wide-ranging repertoire from renaissance polyphony to baroque opera, art songs from the 19th and 20th century through to contemporary music theatre reflects his broad interests. Moreover, he is acclaimed for combining his enthusiasm for playing and his acting instinct with the "radiantly fragile" (BR, 04.22) and "semi-dark" (SZ, 10.22) qualities of his countertenor.

After his debut at the Berlin State Opera as Michael in G. F. Haas' chamber opera
«Thomas», the 2023/24 season brought some important role and house debuts for Elmar Hauser: The Swiss-born singer could be seen at the Zurich Opera House in «Midsummer Night's Dream» or as Hanno Buddenbrook in the world premiere of Ludger Vollmer's
«Buddenbrooks» at the Kiel Theater. In addition to concert appearances with the Accademia di Monaco and La Fontaine, he worked with the Lautten Compagney Berlin in the production of «Der Teufel im Lift» at the Neuköllner Oper. He covered the role of Orlofsky under Vladimir Jurowski and Barrie Kosky in Munich’s new production of «Die Fledermaus».

In the 2022/23 season he sang the alto part in Bach's «St. John Passion» with the Finnish Baroque Orchestra at the Musiikkitalo Helsinki and covered the role of Guildenstern in Brett Dean's «Hamlet» at the Bavarian State Opera.

Elmar Hauser switched from tenor to countertenor during his precollege at the Winterthur Conservatory with David Thorner and Jane Thorner-Mengedoht. He completed his bachelor's degree with distinction at the Zurich University of the Arts with Werner Güra, followed by his master's degree at the August Everding Theater Academy in the singing classes of Christiane Iven and Sabine Lahm. Master classes with Topi Lehtipuu, Ulrich Messthaler, Nicola Beller Carbone, Terry Wey and Kai Wessel accompanied his training. He was a scholarship holder of the Friedl Wald Foundation, the Johann Adolph Hasse Society Munich and the Yehudi Menuhin «Live Music Now" Munich. In the summer of 2024 he won 1st prize at the Concorso Lirico Internazionale di Portofino «CLIP», being the first countertenor to reach the finals of this prestigious competition.

His own artistic projects include an interdisciplinary music theater project on ecological issues with the OTTER OTTER OTTER collective, his song programs «Night and Dreams», «Histoires naturelles» and «Pilgrimage» as well as the opera production «Händel kurz vor Dienstschluss – Opern im Archivkarton». In addition, he has already been seen as Orfeo in «Orfeo ed Euridice», in the title roles of Handel's «Ariodante» or «Il Giasone» by F. Cavalli, and as Prince Kürtchen in the children's opera «Die Gändemagd». At the Prinzregententheater Munich he sang Achilles in W. A. Schultz's «Achill unter den Mädchen» with the Munich Radio Orchestra.
